Waitrose is rolling out its online ‘Rapid’ delivery service and expanding click & collect slots by 50% as demand for e-commerce remains at Christmas levels. The Rapid service, which delivers a basket of up to 25 grocery items in less than two hours, has been trialled in eight stores in London, as well as in Hove, East Sussex. Waitrose has expanded its food delivery service after initially prioritising all delivery slots for the elderly and vulnerable. The retailer has added an extra 10,000 online delivery slots to help cope with the unprecedented demand and has expanded its rapid delivery service, which lets customers order their groceries and receive them in two hours or less.

We've been checking for delivery slots on Waitrose's website each day and are starting to see more free slots become available. Click & collect definitely seems to be the better option, however, if you want to order your grocery delivery from Waitrose, customers are advised to check back daily as more slots are added. You should only book one slot per week, too, to ensure others can find a delivery slot.

Waitrose opening hours

The first opening hour of Waitrose supermarkets is dedicated to elderly and vulnerable shoppers. Opening hours remain the same 8am to 8pm, but some shops may also close earlier than normal to keep shelves stocked. This will vary in different parts of the country, store to store, however.

Waitrose is also setting aside a proportion of hard-to-find and essential products exclusively for NHS staff. NHS staff will also be given priority access to shops and checkouts, to ensure they can complete their shop as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Waitrose has launched a Volunteer’s Shopping Card for self-isolating customers who can’t get to the shops themselves. It’s a simple, safe and contact-free way to get your groceries delivered by a friend or family member, and can be purchased online. Once you’ve added some funds of up to £10 to £500, you can email your e-gift card to your designated shopper which they can then use in store.

Volunteers can also pick up your click & collect order on your behalf if you’re self-isolating. All they need is the order confirmation number and their own form of ID (a debit or credit card, driving licence or utility bill).

How to get a Waitrose delivery slot

You might be sick of hearing it, but checking back daily is the best way to find a Waitrose delivery slot. The website shows when slots are available, and it’s easy to switch between different addresses if you’re looking for family and friends. It’s also worth checking if any click & collect slots are available if you can’t find a delivery slot.

The supermarket has expanded its online collection service to a further 110 shops across the UK, too. Waitrose's ‘rapid’ service is also now available in 20 additional shops across London, and should help 2.5 million households get food and essentials more easily.

How does Waitrose click & collect work?

If you’d prefer to use click & collect, simply select your groceries with Waitrose online and select click & collect before you checkout. Availability is generally good but will vary depending on your area, so we can only advise that you keep checking for new slots when you can.

UK grocer Waitrose has extended the capacity of its rapid delivery service, more than trebling the number of slots available each week.

The retailer said it can now provide more than 2.5 million households the option to use the service to get the food and essentials they need during the Covid-19 coronavirus crisis.

In a statement released today (17 April), Waitrose said by the end of next week at least 40% of these new slots will be reserved exclusively for the elderly and vulnerable. The major grocers are able to identify people most in need after the government shared the relevant data with them a few weeks ago.

Waitrose said it will contact customers on the government's list of vulnerable people to inform them they have priority access to rapid slots – a service which enables shoppers to receive up to 25 grocery items within two hours or less or on the same day.

The Waitrose rapid service has been trialled from eight London shops, as well as in Hove, East Sussex. From today it will be available in the areas surrounding an additional 20 shops across London.

By adding these new locations, Waitrose said it will increase the number of available rapid delivery slots from 2,000 to 7,000 each week.

The supermarket chain, which is part of the John Lewis Partnership, has also announced it will offer an additional 10,000 online grocery collection slots, taking the total number available each week to 30,000. It is doing this by introducing its online collection service in around 70 additional shops across the UK by the end of May.

Some 40 shops are expected to offer this by the end of April, and at least a quarter of the collection slots will be reserved for the elderly and vulnerable as is the case with its general Waitrose.com service during this time of health emergency.

Ben Stimson, Waitrose.com director, commented: “We are now making more online deliveries than Christmas week, every week, and have increased slots to reach 20% more customers than usual.

“We know there is demand for more slots and we are doing all we can to give as many people as possible the opportunity to get the essentials they need – especially those who need them the most.”

He added that Waitrose has recruited hundreds of drivers and increased the number of extra people-hours picking Waitrose.com orders by nearly 50%. Research from Totaljobs and the British Chambers of Commerce, released today, found logistics and IT sector job availability spiked significantly in March, as businesses adapted to the crisis and sought the relevent skills base.
